The Rongai Route, known for its tranquility and unique perspectives of Kilimanjaro, is an excellent choice for those seeking a more remote and less crowded ascent to the summit. This 7-day itinerary is designed to provide climbers with ample time to acclimatize, increase their chances of reaching Uhuru Peak successfully, and enjoy the scenic beauty of the mountain. The route starts on the northeastern side of Kilimanjaro, offering a different approach than the more popular southern routes.

Arrival in Moshi
Upon your arrival in Moshi, Tanzania, you will be greeted by your guide and transferred to your accommodation. Here, you will meet your climbing team, receive a briefing on the climb, and ensure that you have all the necessary gear and equipment for the journey. Rest and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
The first day of the climb begins with a drive to the Rongai Gate. From there, you’ll start your ascent through lush rainforests, where the trek is relatively gentle. The hike to Simba Camp (2,650 meters) provides an easy introduction to the mountain and allows you to acclimatize gradually. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by the vibrant flora and fauna of Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes.
Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp
As you continue your journey, the landscape transforms from lush forest to moorland. The trail takes you past the Second Cave, and you’ll ascend to an elevation of 3,450 meters at the Second Cave Camp. This gradual ascent helps you acclimatize to the increasing altitude and offers your first taste of the open mountain terrain, with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.
Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp
Your fourth day on the Rongai Route involves a steady climb towards Kikelewa Camp (3,600 meters). The path is scenic, featuring expansive views of the plains below and rugged rock formations. This stage of the journey allows for continued acclimatization and takes you one step closer to Kilimanjaro’s summit.
Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
From Kikelewa Camp, you’ll embark on a challenging ascent toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 meters). As you approach the campsite, you’ll be greeted by stunning views of Mawenzi Peak, one of Kilimanjaro’s dormant volcanic cones. The trek helps you acclimatize further, and you’ll spend the night with the impressive peaks as your backdrop.
Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
On this day, the trail takes you across the vast and arid Saddle, the high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. You’ll trek to Kibo Hut (4,700 meters), the final campsite before your summit attempt. Here, you’ll rest, eat, and prepare for the challenging push to Uhuru Peak.
Summit Day (Uhuru Peak) and Descend to Horombo Hut
The summit day begins early in the morning, around midnight. You’ll embark on a demanding ascent under the starry skies, aiming for Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, at 5,895 meters. After reaching the summit and relishing in the spectacular sunrise, you’ll start your descent back to Kibo Hut. From there, the journey continues to Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night.
