The Rongai Route is one of the less-traveled paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This 6-day itinerary offers climbers a unique and less crowded experience. The journey begins on the northeastern side of the mountain, and its gradual ascent is known to be particularly suitable for those seeking a more relaxed pace and for trekkers who might be less accustomed to high altitudes.

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Your journey on the Rongai Route commences at the Rongai Gate. The trail leads through lush rainforests, offering glimpses of unique flora and fauna. The path is relatively gentle, making it a suitable starting point for acclimatization. You’ll spend your first night at Simba Camp (about 2,650 meters above sea level), immersed in the tranquility of the forest.
Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp
Continuing through the forest, you’ll make your way to Kikelewa Camp (approximately 3,600 meters). The terrain changes as you ascend, with views of the Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding moorlands. Your body is gradually adjusting to the altitude, and the picturesque scenery keeps you motivated.
Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Day four brings you closer to the second highest peak of Kilimanjaro, Mawenzi. You’ll reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp (about 4,330 meters), situated near a stunning alpine tarn. The views of Mawenzi and the vast expanse of the landscape are awe-inspiring, making this a memorable stop on your journey.
Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
You’ll trek across the lunar-like landscape and head to Kibo Hut, the basecamp for your summit attempt. At an elevation of approximately 4,700 meters, Kibo Hut is where you’ll rest and prepare for your final push to the Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Kilimanjaro.
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Horombo Hut
The highlight of your journey is summit day. In the early hours, you’ll embark on a challenging ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), the Roof of Africa. Watching the sunrise from the summit is a breathtaking experience. After celebrating your accomplishment, you’ll begin your descent to Horombo Hut, a well-deserved rest at around 3,700 meters.
