Arrival in Moshi
Upon your arrival in Moshi, Tanzania, you will be welcomed by your tour operator and transferred to your hotel. Here, you will have a pre-climb briefing, where you’ll meet your guide and fellow trekkers. You can use this time to ask any questions and make sure you have all the necessary gear for the trek. After the briefing, you’ll have time to rest and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your Kilimanjaro journey officially begins as you depart from your hotel and head towards the Lemosho Gate. At the gate, you’ll complete the necessary park registration formalities, and then the trek kicks off. The trail passes through lush rainforests, filled with a variety of wildlife and beautiful flora. After several hours of hiking, you’ll reach the Mti Mkubwa Camp, where you’ll spend your first night on the mountain. It’s an excellent opportunity to start getting used to the high-altitude environment.
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
The trail continues through the rainforest, which eventually transitions into moorland. You’ll ascend through the scenic forest, occasionally catching glimpses of Mount Kilimanjaro. Today’s destination is Shira 1 Camp, situated in a high-altitude desert-like plateau. As you ascend, you’ll start to feel the effects of the altitude, and it’s crucial to stay well-hydrated and monitor your health.
Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Your hike takes you from Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp, gaining altitude gradually. The landscape changes as you enter the alpine desert zone. You’ll have breathtaking views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. This day serves as a good acclimatization opportunity, allowing your body to adjust to the increasing altitude. Your overnight stay at Shira 2 Camp prepares you for the more challenging days ahead.
Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Today’s trek takes you to the Lava Tower, which stands at around 4,630 meters above sea level. This is a significant altitude gain that helps your body adapt to the thinning air. After reaching Lava Tower, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp, which sits at a lower altitude. This descent aids in acclimatization and prepares you for the Barranco Wall climb on the following day.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The most challenging part of today’s journey is the ascent of the Barranco Wall, a steep and thrilling climb that requires some basic rock scrambling. Once you conquer the wall, the trail levels out and takes you to Karanga Camp, a relatively short hike. The campsite is strategically placed at a higher altitude to facilitate acclimatization. You’ll have stunning views of the surrounding valleys and peaks.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Your trek continues towards Barafu Camp, which is the base camp for the final ascent to the summit. The landscape becomes more arid and rocky as you approach this high-altitude campsite. You’ll rest here, enjoy a hearty meal, and prepare for the summit push in the evening. It’s a challenging day, but your guides will ensure you’re ready for the big climb.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and descent to Mweka Camp
Today is the highlight of your trek as you embark on the summit attempt. The journey starts in the early hours of the morning to take advantage of the favorable weather conditions. The trek to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro, is challenging and rewarding. As you reach the summit, you’ll witness a breathtaking sunrise over the African continent. After taking in the incredible views and celebrating your achievement, you’ll begin your descent, passing through Barafu Camp and continuing down to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Descent to Mweka Gate and Return to Moshi
The final day of your trek involves a descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Here, you’ll complete the necessary formalities to receive your summit certificates. Your journey concludes with a transfer back to Moshi, where you can celebrate your successful Kilimanjaro climb and reflect on the remarkable experience.
