Arrival in Moshi
Your journey begins with your arrival in Moshi, a vibrant town located at the foothills of Kilimanjaro. You’ll meet your climbing team, which typically includes experienced guides and porters, who will provide a warm welcome and help with final preparations.
Start of the Adventure – Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)
On day two, you’ll drive to the Lemosho Gate where your trek commences. The trail leads through the lush rainforest, and the sounds of exotic birdlife surround you. The day’s hike concludes at Mti Mkubwa Camp, where you’ll spend your first night under the starry African sky.
Forest to Heathland – Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp (3,505m)
You’ll leave the forest behind as you ascend into the heathland zone. The transition in vegetation is striking, and you’ll witness breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau. Tonight’s camp is at Shira 1, where you’ll rest as you gain altitude.
Shira Plateau Exploration – Acclimatization Day at Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)
Acclimatization is crucial at higher elevations. On this day, you’ll remain at Shira 2 Camp and go for short acclimatization hikes, taking in panoramic views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape.
Trek to Barranco Camp (3,960m) via Lava Tower (4,600m)
Today’s hike takes you to the high point at Lava Tower, providing excellent acclimatization, before descending to Barranco Camp. The descent helps your body adjust to the altitude changes and ensures a better chance of summit success.
Barranco Wall and Karanga Valley – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3,995m)
The day starts with a challenging ascent of the Barranco Wall, an iconic feature of the Lemosho Route. This steep climb is followed by a journey through the Karanga Valley, offering a fascinating glimpse of the alpine desert.
Uhuru Peak – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m)
This is the big day, the one you’ve been working towards – the summit bid. You’ll start from Karanga Camp, ascending through the challenging, high-altitude terrain towards Barafu Camp. It’s a demanding climb, and you’ll need to summon your inner strength and determination. As you reach Barafu Camp, located at an elevation of 4,640 meters, you’ll rest and prepare for the midnight summit push.
After achieving the summit, you’ll have a profound sense of accomplishment and pride. Your guides and fellow climbers will share in your joy, and you’ll take time to capture memories with photographs. Yet, it’s important to remember that you’re only halfway through your journey.
You’ll descend back to Barafu Camp, where you can rest and regain your strength before further descending to lower altitudes. This day is marked by a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration, and your sleep at Barafu Camp is well-earned, with dreams of your triumphant summit bid fresh in your mind.
